The Leader

Leadership Coaching

Leadership can be a lonely place – but it can also be the platform to make a profound impact.  The Practice provides executive coaching to leaders of regulatory bodies bringing deep coaching practice combined with experience working within the regulatory environment.  Our coaching approach is based on building self-awareness, clarifying a preferred future state and combining non-directive practice with observation from experienced regulators.

Leader Skills Development

The Practice offers a number of leadership development programs through its network that are customized for regulatory leadership including coaching skills for leaders, collaboration and facilitation, conflict resolution, and change management.

Board Chair Coaching

Chairing a board of a regulatory body is a unique leadership challenge. The Practice offers confidential Chair coaching to provide a sounding board to new and experienced chairs – providing a non-judgmental space to share challenges and learnings, develop strategies to manage difficult board members and build strong relationships with management.

General Advisory Services

The Practice offers ongoing advisory services to both board and executive leaders of regulators in the areas of governance, strategy, leadership, regulatory effectiveness and culture.

The Board

Governance Education

The Practice offers a suite of regulatory governance education modules designed to meet the specific needs of board members, board leaders and staff. Some examples include, Regulatory Governance Foundations, Fiduciary Duties and Conflict of Interest, Chair as Facilitator, Navigating Conflict.

Governance Practice Assessment

Regular assessment of strengths and areas of improvement is an important governance best practice and often a requirement of oversight bodies, government or other stakeholders.  The Practice has developed a regulatory-specific governance practice assessment tool that is practical, meaningful and cost effective.   We work with clients to customize the assessment process to address specific needs and time constraints, engage both staff and board members meaningfully in the process, facilitate a proper debrief, and ensure that the organization is left with a practical roadmap for moving forward.

Strategic Facilitation

At times boards need support in working through tough, complex issues.  The Practice offers external facilitation support to help boards in designing and facilitating processes to address these issues and ensure that these discussions are inclusive, productive and respectful.

Board Culture Development

Even in the presence of good policy and procedure, a toxic board culture can get in the way of a board fulfilling its duty and the organization’s ability to fulfill its mandate. The Practice works with clients to design customized processes to articulate values and expected behaviors, and develop processes and norms to ensure these values and expectations are lived and upheld.

Governance Policy Development

Boards need a framework of practical policies to guide their work and their interactions with management.  Often governance policy development is either neglected or is so time-consuming that it takes a board’s attention from the work of the organization.  The Practice works with clients to understand the problems needing to be solved, engage the users and those impacted by the policy, and develop policy that is practical, inclusive and fit for purpose.

Team and Culture Development

Regulators need strong leadership and strong teams to lean into the challenges faced.  These leaders and teams need to live a clear set of shared values, be open to feedback and growth, be aware of what is happening in the internal and external environments and understand their place in these environments. The Practice designs and facilitates discussions and processes to create shared values, clarify mutual expectations, develop collaboration skills and address issues getting in the way of a strong culture.

Governance Reviews

At times an organization needs to step back and assess whether its governance structures, practices and processes are enabling the organization to meet its mandate.  The Practice designs and delivers comprehensive governance reviews that engage the various players within the governance ecosystem, provide honest feedback based on deep regulatory governance experience, and support the client to articulate practical and meaningful steps forward.

Strategic Planning

Even in the most volatile and uncertain times, a regulator needs to plan.  Based on a customized strategy framework, made for regulators, The Practice works with leaders to design and facilitate processes to address critical strategic questions: Who are you? Where are you now? Where are you going? How are you going to get there? The clarity and alignment found in the answers to these questions determines the design of the planning process needed.

Regulatory Impact Assessments

Good regulation requires continuous evaluation of regulatory programs to ensure they are effective, relevant and fit for purpose.  The Practice works with clients to design a process to review all regulatory programs through a Right-touch regulatory lens.  These reviews can either be externally-led or they can focus more on empowering an internal team to assess regulatory programs on an ongoing basis.

Regulatory Policy Development

The Practice works with government, oversight bodies and regulators to develop regulatory policy within complex, changing environments. Our deep and diverse understanding of regulation allows us to develop processes and policy that are relevant, practical and fit for purpose.

Amalgamation Support

Amalgamation of regulatory bodies is not easy – but often it’s the right decision. The Practice works hand in hand with both inhouse and external resources to support these amalgamation processes through strategic facilitation, culture development, leadership coaching, governance design and decision support.

System Transformation Facilitation

As regulatory leaders, change is all around us, and often what gets in the way is the system itself. The Practice designs and facilitates system level discussions to articulate future state, address problems and build trusted relationships to move forward together.
